Virginia Xi brothers bring home glory in 2020 Fraternity & Sorority Life Awards
In early April, seven of our brothers were named as nominees for various awards being awarded in Old Dominion University’s annual Fraternity & Sorority Awards. These brothers exemplify what SigEp is all about and were very excited to have the chance and even be nominated for awards that only three SigEp’s had won before. This excitement and anticipation to see if anyone won lasted a week. After this week the first of our brothers was announced as a award recipient, our amazing academic advisor and renaissance brother, Joe Ritchie.
Joe won the Donald K. Marchand Outstanding Alumni/ae Award named in honor of Donald K. Marchand, a past advisor for Sigma Nu Fraternity. Donald Marchand was instrumental in shaping the ODU Fraternity & Sorority Life community and exemplified the qualities of an outstanding advisor and volunteer. This award recognizes a chapter advisor or alumni/ae volunteer who possesses outstanding qualities and contributions to their respective chapter, as well as to the Fraternity & Sorority Life Community.
The next brother to win an award was our Sigma Challenge Coordinator, Hayden Holmes. Hayden won the Selfless Helper Award which was given to five outstanding Fraternity & Sorority Life men or women who have excelled within the Fraternity & Sorority Life community but have not been recognized. The applicant should be an unsung hero who puts in hours of behind-the-scenes work. They are a positive role model and advocate for the ODU Fraternity & Sorority Life community and should value and be committed to the Fraternity & Sorority Life ideals and the university.
Next up was our Chapter President, Calvin Dugger. Calvin won the Outstanding New Member of the Year Award which is given to one IFC member, one MGC member, one NPHC member, and one PHC member, who joined during the Fall 2019 or Spring 2019 semesters. The criterion includes their leadership, service, GPA, and overall contribution to the Fraternity & Sorority Life Community as well as to Old Dominion University.
After the Chapter President was the IFC President himself, Cart Spradlin. Carter won the Outstanding Fraternity & Sorority Life Senior which was given to five seniors or collegiate members graduating or accepting alumni status by or before December 2020, who have excelled in leadership, scholarship, service, or campus involvement.
We ended of this year FSL Awards with one final success, this award was for the whole chapter. We won the Fraternity & Sorority Life Excellence in Scholarship Award as we maintained the highest GPA out of all IFC Chapters for the past two semesters.
We are beyond proud of all of our brothers. This fraternity, much like sports, is not a one man game. It takes a brotherhood, a family to be as successful as we’ve been and we are thankful for all of our brothers. #VDBL
